The Newly Reopened Rochdale Station Subway
Before and after at Rochdale Station's subway.
The first photograph was taken in September 2014 and shows the utter dereliction of the old Miall Street entrance to the station. There are vast amounts of rubble, litter and vegetation. After many delays in the second picture we see the virtually complete restored subway again from the Miall Street end , looking north. Yorkshire stone flags have been put in place and the original brickwork and tiling restored to its former glory. There is strip lighting at the sides and attractive black railings preventing access to the redundant platforms.
At the Miall Street entrance there are attractive large gates in the same style as the railings. These will be locked at night.
The official opening ceremony is on Friday July 10th 2015 at 11:15. Representatives of Transport for Greater Mmanchester; Network Rail; Northern Rail and Rochdale Council will be present.
STORM - collectively and individually- have campaigned long and hard for this to happen. The subway was closed way back in 1979 - long before many rail users were even born!
The new Park and Ride facility off Hare Street is certain to be more used now. Taxis will be able to deliver/collect rail passengers outside the Miall Street entrance. Well done to all the various parties involved in this fantastic improvement.
