The original Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway bridge over Gipsy Lane is a matter of yards from the March Barn Bridge over the Rochdale Canal in Castleton, Rochdale.
The canal bridge is the first example of a ‘Skew’ bridge (1804) in England and is believed to follow the Pack Horse route from Rochdale to Middleton, Greater Manchester.
The railway bridge is over 175 years old and has had the track upgraded recently to accommodate 70 mph running.
The views here show the ‘old’, Britannia and the new class 802 crossing the bridge.
The Maybarn Bridge is a short walk along the canal adjacent to Castleton Station, toward Rochdale. The Gipsy Lane Bridge is ‘down’ the footpath from the Canal where the photo’s were taken from.
