Castleton E. Jn. signals removed. March 31st 2013
A signalling afficionardo informs STORM that the arrangement on the double arm signal shown in the photo, view towards Manchester from Castleton Station, is now so unusual that it may now be the last example on Network Rail. The home signal is the starter for Castleton East Junction 'box on the right, and is still manually worked. The distant signal is motor worked as it is the distant for the Intermediate Block signal towards Mills Hill.
We cannot say one way or the other. Have you an example elswhere? Please let us know.
On Easter Sunday, 31st March 2013, track work at Castleton relaid the connection out of the down loop into the main line towards Rochdale. The remaining semaphore signals were removed during the evening from Castleton East Junction, although the gantry is still standing.
